HEAT PUMP INSTALLATION and air conditioning Service, serving the waikato

HEAT PUMP INSTALLATION

The air conditioning division at Alpha Electrical takes pride in the consideration that goes into the planning and quoting stage. We are regularly awarded jobs due to the care we put in - rather than choosing the easiest place to install, we are committed to finding a solution that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Clients have told us that when they were seeking quotes that a “back to back” installation was the only option offered. That is with the indoor unit fitted to an external wall and the outdoor unit fitted directly behind the indoor unit position. There is no question that this is the quickest and most cost-effective form of installation and in many cases, perfectly suitable.

But, you don’t always want that outdoor unit sitting at the front of your house! It is possible to install your indoor unit on internal walls and position outdoor units away at the rear or unseen side of the building away from street view. Installation options will be explained at our initial consultation.

 HEAT PUMP SERVICE

Just like a car, a heat pump needs regular servicing. When you neglect to service your car, it loses efficiency and will inevitably have problems further down the road. Your heat pump is no different.

All leading heat pump manufacturers recommend having your heat pump serviced at least annually. This extends the heat pump's lifespan and efficiency. It also rids it of mold and dust build up, which can be detrimental to health.

Our seven-point service includes:

  1. Cleaning indoor unit filters and coil of dust, pollen, bacteria and mold.

  2. Verifying the output temperature of the indoor unit in both heating and cooling.

  3. Cleaning the coil of the outdoor unit of debris, slowing corrosion.

  4. Straightening coil fins bent by debris and vermin, aiding air flow and efficiency.

  5. Inspecting outdoor unit fan bearings and balance.

  6. Checking refrigerant levels and piping for signs of leaks, which impede function.

  7. Ensuring the entire heat pump is electrically sound.

The unit above was a popular model that had been installed for six years and had never been serviced. Over the summer months while running in the cooling mode dust and debris built up through the fins and collected in the bottom drip tray. Once winter came and the unit was run in heating, condensed water ran off the fins and formed a muddy sludge in the drip tray. This blocked the drain holes in the drip tray causing sludge to build up. This process repeated for the following five years rusting out the drip tray and causing the fins to corrode that eventually lead to a refrigerant leak.

A six-year-old unit that should have had at least another six years of life was now uneconomical to repair and only good for the scrap yard. This could have been prevented with a yearly service.

 types of heat pumps

The High-Wall Heat Pump

This style is what will immediately come to mind when you think "Heat Pump". Installation is one unit per room. You may get a situation where you heat a lounge and the positioning allows residual heat to flow into hall ways or other rooms but generally these extra areas won't reach the set temperatures or the room where the heat pump is installed. One unit will not heat an entire house.

The size range is usually around 2.0 Kw through to 9.0 Kw heating. This may vary slightly between manufacturers.

The Floor Console

The floor console is a floor-mounted unit that can be fitted a little above floor level. A popular position to place these units is in old fire places. The open fire cavity is closed up with a piece of ply, painted and then the indoor unit sits in the hearth against the ply. Looks very tidy and stops the hearth area from looking like a redundant space.

Naturally these models can be fitted as a stand alone unit against any wall that has clear space in front to move air out into the room.

Can be a consideration for a hall way application if a suitable position allows.

Seem to be very popular in the South Island.

Size range is from 3 Kw to 6 Kw heating. This will vary between manufacturers.
